Face Like a Lady, Dressed Like A Man?
In the beginning, it was all about being one of the boys, but keeping it cute. Female artists like MC Lyte had the faces of angels while wearing baggy jeans, oversized jerseys and timberland boots. Hip-Hop as a culture has evolved and so did its fashion. Women are no longer forced into the constraints of having a cute face like a lady, but dressing like man to fit into the male-dominated Rap mold. Women have a whole new swag and are the visual fashion eye candy they were created to be with a flow that is as naughty or nice as they make it. They are stepping away from the expected and exploring their personal style.
When women decided to pick up the mic, pump their fist and say “Give us free!!” we started to see new trends. Along with the being One of the Boys Style; the Women of Hip-Hop can fall into three more categories: Making a Statement Style, The Sex Symbol and The Fashion Forward MC.
Making a Statement Style:
When making a statement, you can be as literal as Left eye and TLC wearing condoms as eye patches promoting safe sex or you can follow the examples of artists like Missy Elliot or Nicki Minaj. These two ladies have forever changed the game with their innovation.
Whether Missy is wearing garbage bags or shaving her head bald, she will always stay creative, interesting and keep you looking. Her style statement is “Dress out the box.”
Nicki Minaj’s style is colorful, fun and theatrical. She is never afraid of being an individual and her clothing choices are about as predictable as her multiple personalities. Her style statement is “Do what ever you want.”
The Sex Symbols
The sex symbols of the Rap world usually follow the motto of “Less is more.” Artists like Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown paved the way for this style of Hip-Hop dress. Short skirts, bustiers and 6” stilettos will serve you well in this category.
The Fashion Forward MC
These are the Hip-Hop Fashionistas that give me closet envy. Lauryn Hill, Eve and newcomer Iggy Azalea are my favorite trendsetting Hip-Hop girls to watch. It doesn’t matter if it is a red carpet, a video or performance these girls are dressed to impress and their style reaches past a musical genre. If you want to look like a Fashion Forward Hip-Hop Fashionista; take looks off the catwalk and give them an urban flare. You can urbanize a look with accessories and hair choices.
Whatever fashion decisions you make; just know that it is ok to take risks and show your personality through your clothing. You don’t have to look like a Pretty Thug to make it as a woman in Hip-Hop. Have fun dressing up and stepping out!
DOPE FASHION ALERT!!!!
